My parents came to stay with us in Milwaukee because their flight to Mexico left very early in the morning. We were happy to have them for the night, but after they left I couldn’t help but wish I had just hopped a plane to somewhere tropical. The fresh fruit citrus juices are just like being on a beach. Well, sort of.
2 jiggers Vodka
1 jigger Citrus simple syrup (recipe follows)
1 1/2-inch thick slice of Lemon
1 1/2-inch thick slice of Lime
1 1/2-inch thick slice of orange
Use these proportions for each drink: cut each slice of fruit into quarters. In a cocktail shaker, muddle the fruit well, then add the simple syrup, vodka, and ice. Shake well, and strain into martini glasses. Float a thin slice of lime on top for garnish.
This drink is also very good over ice and topped with seltzer.
Citrus Simple Syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2 pieces of lemon zest, cut in a 1-inch wide strip from end-to-end
2 pieces of lime zest, cut in a 1-inch wide strip from end-to-end
2 pieces of orange zest, cut in a 1-inch wide strip from end-to-end
Put all ingredients into a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Allow to boil for approximately 1 minute and then remove from the heat to cool.
